The quote is from Emily Ritter's Montana Public Radio feature interview last night of both Toole and Gallagher, and comes in the context of Mr. Gallagher's concern that MSTI will raise rates for Montanans.
For those of us that are familiar with the physics of the Montana electrical grid, it is clear that MSTI will not suck all the energy out of Montana. Here is why:
- Montana has about 5500 MW of generation capacity
- MSTI only has a capacity of 1500 MW (From NWMT's website)
- 1500 is less than 5500 => MSTI can not suck all the energy out of Montana.
Mr. Gallagher is also concerned that Californians will be able to bid against Montanan's for this energy. This is also impossible, as MSTI stops in southern Idaho. From there, there is little or effectively no capacity to move power to California. Which means, if anything, Montanans would be competing with Idaho for our energy and that may be a good thing for Montana as Idaho pays less on average for energy than we do in Montana (keep in mind power can flow both ways on electrical transmission).
Idaho: $56.9 per MWh
Montana: $77.2 per MWh
Moving forward, I actually think the market impacts to Montanans from new transmission are really important and need more substantive analysis. As a first step, maybe those running for elected offices could commit to doing just that.

ReplyDeleteEveryone should know that Ken Toole has major concerns about MSTi as well. MSTI is NOT a wind-energy project, but is a means by which to export energy from coal and possibly tar sands in Canada. It is also a means by which Northwestern Energy will improve their stock value and sell the company. They are worth less than the cost of the line, so they are not going to build it. They are going to get the permit and sell the company to someone with the capital to build it. That could be the Canadians, the South Koreans or any number of countries that will sell the energy to the highest bidder (not us).
To top it all off, there are no buyers for this energy. The line dead ends in Idaho and they have no way to get their dirty energy to Vegas and LA. It is literally the "Power Line to Nowhere." In addition, they have no producers. The governor talks about all the potential, but nobody is buying in to wind energy in Montana. Why? We are a long distance from the markets. You lose at least 30% of the energy transporting it 1500 miles, so like Mongolia, we have plenty of wind energy, but no markets. Let's keep our wind energy in Montana and make our state the first green-energy state in the union.
This project is a boondoggle and does nothing to help climate change. It takes 20 years to make up for the carbon footprint of an industrial-scale wind turbine; we don't have 20 years, and besides, this project is clearly about transporting coal energy.....so much for doing our part for climate change. We should focus on getting folks off of the grid (NWE is not interested in this idea, of course) by providing incentives for rooftop wind and solar. This distributed energy is the future, not the industrial-scale boondoggle proposed to fill the coffers of Northwestern Energy.
My green friends need to carefully examine the MSTI project. They will find, like me, that they don't like what they learn about it. It will forever ruin the Jefferson, Beaverhead and Red Rock River valleys, provide no energy for Montanan's, raise our energy rates and hurt landscape-based jobs (e.g., guided fishing, ranching, etc.) in its path.
It is simply a bad idea and a fundamental shift in Montana towards an energy state (the governor's words, not mine).
